Bears Make Huge Coach Firing in Wake of Week 10 Disaster
By Joe Summers
The Bears officially have their first scapegoat of this disappointing season, unceremoniously firing offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday following the disastrous 19-3 loss to the Patriots in Week 10.
This was Waldron's first year with Chicago but it quickly became obvious that he was a terrible fit. The Bears currently rank 31st in yards per play (4.3) and 24th in points per game (19.4) despite having an offense that looked loaded on paper entering the year.
Given Caleb Williams' stunning struggles and rumors the coaching staff already lost the locker room, firing Waldron was one of the only cards head coach Matt Eberflus had left to play before he's shown the door himself.
Bears Fire OC Shane Waldron to Start Week 11
Waldron was not the only problem with the offense. Williams isn't playing well, the offensive line has been among the worst in the NFL, and Eberflus' situational game management has been poor. Nonetheless, there was no real evidence suggesting that Waldron deserved to run the offense any longer.
Williams entered the season considered the greatest QB prospect in years. Molding him into Chicago's first legitimate franchise signal caller is the most important task facing the organization. Instead of giving Williams the tools to succeed, Waldron's rudimentary schemes left Williams fighting for his life, nearly always behind schedule.
It feels like a foregone conclusion that Eberflus and the rest of his staff will be gone after the year. Waldron's firing at least gives the other coaches an opportunity to salvage the season and pin the blame on him.
Passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will take over play-calling duties. The Bears have a crucial divisional showdown with the Packers on Sunday. A win would put Chicago back in the playoff hunt, while a loss would effectively end the team's postseason hopes.
The future is still bright for Williams and this offense, but firing Waldron needed to happen. The move likely comes too late to save this year, though it's a step in the right direction regardless.
