The Chicago Bears have done an incredible job managing the team's cap space and keeping their current core intact. Outside of D'Andre Swift, there isn't one major offensive piece whose future remains a question mark. Still, this does come at an obvious cost, as the front office has built a roster capable of competing for a Super Bowl.
With this in mind, let's look ahead to the 2026 season and consider Chicago's largest expected cap hits. Starting with a defender facing an incredible level of pressure based on the lack of established help heading into the 2026 season.
1. Montez Sweat- $25 Million
If Sweat doesn't deliver double-digit sacks and set the tone for the current edge rushing depth chart, there is no question the Bears are in trouble. The lack of proven options after Sweat remains a bit alarming on what is otherwise an incredibly strong roster. It is fair to wonder if another move is upcoming as the potential weakness has consistently been pointed to throughout the offseason and leading in training camp.
This makes it clear there is zero level of regret with Sweat's current cap hit or thoughts of moving in a different direction. As long as the pass rusher remains productive, he is an incredibly important piece of a defense lacking proven edge rushing threats.
2. Jaylon Johnson- $24.5 Million
For Johnson to prove worthy of this level of cap hit, the defensive back is going to need to stay on the field and produce at a more consistent level. Johnson's PFF rating from the 2025 season was 58.7. This isn't the level of performance fans are expecting from a veteran corner who needs to help set the tone as the Bears get used to a new safety tandem anchoring the back of the defense.
If the struggles remain from a season ago, there is going to be a very real conversation about whether or not Johnson is a building block for the current defense. As things currently stand, the cap hit is understandable, but this outlook might quickly change if there isn't a higher level of consistency.
3. Joe Thuney- $21.5 Million
Thuney is worth every penny of this cap hit, bringing a level of needed stability for Caleb Williams and an offensive line heading in the right direction. Thuney has an argument as deserving a raise on his current contract, which would give the possibility of a higher cap hit. Regardless, there is no debating the value in having such a stabilizing presence.
It was a mistake for the Kansas City Chiefs to part ways with such a key piece of their dynasty, and Thuney is taking advantage of his new landing spot, helping form what could be a new dynastic run.
