When looking at the expected Chicago Bears receiver depth chart there only appears to be one position up for grabs. The first five spots on the depth chart should belong to Luther Burden, Rome Odunze, Kalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas, and Jahdae Walker. If Chicago is going to carry six receivers as expected, this leaves one remaining roster spot for a handful of players to win. Veteran Scotty Miller made his case in Saturday's preseason debut being targeted four times and making three catches for 37 yards.
The one missed catch was a poor throw with Miller sitting down in open space and the quarterback finding the pass catcher just in time for him to be crushed from both sides making the catch improbable. It was a solid day for Miller and left the receiver as an obvious favorite for the final spot on the roster.
Miller has a handful of things working in his favor with the most obvious being camp reps and playoff experience. The receiver won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady playing an important role with the franchise making a deep touchdown grab in the NFC Championship against the Green Bay Packers to help set up a championship.

Miller's best season was in 2020 with 501 receiving yards and a trio of touchdown catches working with Bruce Arians and Brady. This version of the aging receiver isn't likely to appear based on Chicago's incredible depth when it comes to capable playmakers. Still, Miller has value as experienced depth and speed that Ben Johnson is likely to utilize a handful of times to catch the opposing defense off guard.
Perhaps this was the only downside of Miller's preseason debut with all three catches being short in comparison to the receiver's downfield ability. It makes a great deal of sense to roster this skill set with the final spot at the position looking not only at the speed, but at the potential value of having an experienced player at a position that is incredibly young.
Raymond is the only veteran currently locked intoa roster spot at the position pointing to the obvious upside of Miller making the team. Even with an underwhelming resume there is value in the experience of making a Super Bowl run and being around Brady and the great receivers Miller has played with. No question, Miller should be the favorite for the final roster spot and is making a solid case in early preseason action.
