The Chicago Bears saw the best and worst of quarterback Tyson Bagent in Saturday's preseason opener. There were a handful of ugly moments as well as notable throws that showed why the signal- caller has earned so much praise from Ben Johnson over the last year. Bagent finished 13/22 for 169 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception in what was an uneven preseason performance. The yardage was impressive, and there were a handful of big plays, including nice catches from Kaden Davis and Maurice Alexander.
Still, the interception was an awful decision that should've never happened, and there was a trio of moments when Bagent was a beat too late making a throw. With this in mind, it is fair to consider the idea of Bagent creating trade value as off to a bit of a rocky start. Saturday's performance wasn't a clear answer, but neither was it a step in the right direction, as the quarterback didn't dominate as hoped.
Bagent did show off his ability to hit throws down the sideline and put together a touchdown drive that took away a bit of the frustration with the missed plays. There is also plenty of time left in preseason and training camp for Bagent to get hot and put together a resume that demands a bit more momentum in a potential chance to start in the future.

Another piece of this for Chicago is the fact that Case Keenum still looks capable as a backup option. If Bagent is able to get hot over the final two preseason games, there is still a chance that a chance to start could open up in the future after spending time with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. For Bagent, there are clear potential landing spots with a handful of teams closing in on the 2026 season with clear questions at the position.
It will be interesting to see how Chicago opts to navigate its current quarterback room and whether Bagent is able to turn the corner in the second preseason game. Fans can still clearly see the potential and ability, with the missing piece continuing to be a lack of consistency from the young quarterback.
Bagent simply needs to improve his decision-making and become a beat faster at getting the ball out of his hands. If this happens, there is no doubt that the signal caller is going to earn an opportunity in the future as a potential bridge option, with a chance to prove he can be much more.
