The Chicago Bears are on the hunt for a new head coach this offseason after the Matt Eberflus experiment was a bust.

It's been four straight seasons without the playoffs in Chicago, meaning the Bears can't afford to strike out on their next coach. Whether it's a supposed 'leader of men' or someone who can properly develop quarterback Caleb Williams, one thing is certain: the Bears need a coach who knows how to win.

As the coaching search continues, general manager Ryan Poles recently shared an update regarding the situation. Unfortunately, it's not the news that Bears fans wanted to hear.

Bears' Head Coaching Search Becomes Overcrowded

Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Poles revealed that the following names are a part of the Bears' search for their next head coach (per ESPN's Courtney Cronin):

  • Ryan Poles, general manager
  • Kevin Warren, president and CEO
  • George McCaskey, chairman
  • Jeff King, senior director of player personnel
  • Matt Feinstein, director of football administration
  • Liz Geist, vice president of human resources

Finding a new head coach is rarely easy, but the Bears have made things harder on themselves. There's no reason why six people need to be involved in the search, especially when Poles and Warren are the only names that are crucial for the process.

The saying "too many cooks in the kitchen" exists for a reason. If half a dozen differing opinions are put into the decision-making process, it's going to be extremely tough to find a candidate that everyone agrees on.

The bad news didn't stop there, though. Cronin added that the Bears GM revealed some surprise candidates that will be interviewed in the coming weeks.

"There's going to be some names that you don't expect, that will surprise you," Poles added.

The last thing Bears fans want is a head coach "that will surprise" the fanbase. What Chicagoans want is a candidate with a proven track record who can help pull the franchise out of mediocrity after going a combined 21-47 without a playoff appearance in the last four seasons. There's no point in wasting time on weird candidates, hoping that one could pan out.

Fortunately, some of the names that the Bears are already being linked to aren't that surprising. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and ex-Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy are two exciting names that could end up in the Windy City, as is former Tennessee Titans HC Mike Vrabel.

If the Bears want to return to glory, they need to focus on the candidates who actually have game-changing potential. They can then look toward more unconventional options if they strike out on the top names.

Based on how the first few days of their offseason have gone, Bears fans are in for a wild ride in the coming months.
