Caleb Williams Gives Clear Approval of Big Name Linked to Bears Job
By Joe Summers
The most important thing on every Bears fan's mind is who will become the next head coach in Chicago after a disastrous stint with Matt Eberflus, and one highly-coveted candidate seemingly just got a stamp of approval from Caleb Williams.
Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator, is a rising star in coaching circles and hoped to be the Bears' top choice. Ryan Poles may have other ideas, though there's no denying that Johnson is a well-respected play-caller who could transform Chicago's offense.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Williams expressed his admiration for Johnson, recalling the two matchups between the Bears and Lions during which Williams had a first-row seat to watch Johnson work.
Caleb Williams Praises Ben Johnson Amid Bears Rumors
"I think he's been really cool to watch. During our game, I would sit back and watch and try and learn something," Williams said. "It was fascinating to watch because he always, like I said, he had wrinkles for counters and things like that throughout the game. I think he's obviously done really well. It'd be cool to see how that all goes down."
While the Bears kept things close in the first meeting, falling just 23-20, they were beaten down 34-17 in the second matchup as Jared Goff threw for 336 yards and three TD passes. It's easy to imagine Williams salivating at the idea of similar numbers, especially given how easy Johnson seems to make everything look for his quarterbacks.
Everything was hard for Williams, who was sacked a league-high 68 times. The front office is doing its due diligence on every candidate, yet finding someone who makes things easier for Williams should be a top priority.
This was a bitterly disappointing campaign that ended in flames despite the Week 18 victory. That said, that win showed this team can be competitive and make a playoff run next year with the right changes. Perhaps Johnson will be one of them, or at least Williams hopes he is.
