Bears Working Out Free-Agent Quarterback on Thursday for One Reason
The Chicago Bears' season is drawing to a close with one final game left on Sunday. The team's attention will then shift immediately to offseason priorities, like determining the future of the quarterback position in Chicago.
While a move or two could happen at QB during the spring, the Bears may actually make one in Week 18.
Bears News: Chris Streveler Works Out
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday morning Chicago is working out free-agent quarterback Chris Streveler. Colleague Courtney Cronin added Bears main backup Tyson Bagent missed practice on Wednesday due to an illness, which surely played a role in setting up Streveler's audition.
The fact the team brought someone in as a possible replacement shows potential concern around Bagent's status for Week 18. This also could be a case of a medical staff opting to err on the side of caution with nothing to play for in the regular-season finale.
However, with the uncertainty in this QB room, surely Bagent would want to suit up on Sunday just in case he gets a chance to make his case as a player Matt Eberflus needs to keep around.
Bagent's absence, for whatever reason, has created an opportunity for Streveler to take advantage of. The former XFL standout turned journeyman NFL backup has appeared in nine games, including a lone start for the New York Jets in 2022, across three seasons.
Streveler hasn't caught on with a squad at all during the 2023 campaign after being cut by New York during training camp. This workout, though, could allow him to impress the staff and help set up a landing spot for the 2024 preseason.
