Bears Select New Caleb Williams Protector in CBS Mock Draft Ahead of Week 1
In general manager Ryan Poles's press conference last week, he said that this is probably the best depth the Bears have ever had at the offensive line since he has been there. Yet, many still see the Bears' offensive line and trench play overall as their biggest weakness.
Currently, the starting unit consists of Braxton Jones (LT), Tevin Jenkins (LG), Coleman Shelton (C), Nate Davis (RG) and Darnell Wright (RT). While, the backup linemen are Ryan Bates, Kiran Amegadjie, Matt Pryor, Bill Murray, Doug Kramer Jr., and Larry Borom.
Jones, at left tackle, is one of the device players on the offensive line. Some fans wanted the Bears to draft a lineman to place him at No.9 overall this past draft. Others have defended his play and said he's played well for a fifth-round pick. Poles and the rest of the Bears coaching staff seem to agree with the latter.
Looking ahead to the 2025 draft, the Bears' only true holes remain in the trenches. Although the NFL season has yet to begin, early mock drafts have already emerged. In CBS Sports' latest mock draft, the Bears are selecting LSU offensive tackle Emery Jones Jr.
Bears Speculation: CBS Sports Has Team Drafting Emery Jones Jr.
According to an article from Sports Illustrated, Jones Jr. has all the tools to succeed in the NFL. The article mentions that Jones Jr. plays with flexibility, which allows him plenty of knee bend and explosiveness off the snap. This helps Jones Jr. slow down speed rushers at the collegiate level.
Another strength of Jones Jr. is his anchor, an area where Braxton Jones has struggled at times in his career. The article credits Jones Jr.'s strong anchor to his flexibility, as it allows him to dig his heels into the ground.
While Jones Jr. will still have work to do to improve once he enters the NFL, he appears to have more upside than Braxton. It will be interesting to see if the Bears draft Jones Jr. or another tackle to replace Braxton in 2025.
