The Chicago Bears were unsure what to expect from defensive back Kyler Gordon, since the defender hasn't played much meaningful football over the past two years. Gordon's career has been defined by injuries and being back on the field in itself was a gift, one that defensive coordinator Dennis Allen quickly took advantage of. Much has been said about Chicago's need to find consistent pass-rushing production and that is especially the case with injuries and Montez Sweat dealing with a suspension.

Gordon was far from an expected answer, but found a way to get to the quarterback three different times and create two turnovers opportunities. The speed and relentless nature of the corner was a perfect answer to Atlanta's offensive line, with the defender slipping past the line and Bijan Robinson more than once to get to Michael Penix Jr. and help make sure that the Bears never lost control of this game.

It will be interesting to watch if this is a sign of things to come for Gordon, or simply an outlier for a player that was an unexpected contributor. Chicago's secondary could badly use the presence of the corner if Gordon can manage to stay on the field and reach the level of play Bears fans enjoyed early in his career.

Gordon had solid years in both 2022 and 2024 showing Chicago a great ability to lock down his matchups and create explosive plays. However, the issue has been during Ben Johnson's tenure the defender simply cannot find a way to get onto the field and stay there.

Kyler Gordon becomes unexpected pass rushing star in return to the lineup

Jumping off the screen as a pass rusher in his return wasn't something that Chicago fans had in the cards, but welcomed. Looking at the season numbers, Gordon only trails Austin Booker when it comes to having the team lead for sacks this season. One game played and having this accomplishment speaks to both the need to find a more consistent edge rushing presence as well as Gordon's elite day.

There is reason to wonder if not only Allen will continue to utilize the corner in this role, but might become more aggressive using his secondary. The defensive coordinator is already noted for his unique ability to create a pass rush, but there was no denying this was a special example.

For Gordon, it is a chance to build momentum and put his season back on track after recent frustrations. The production really isn't in doubt even if it coming in the form of rushing the passer was a clear surprise. The question simply remains the corner staying on the field and being able to play out the rest of the season.
