Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams returned to the starting lineup after missing just three weeks. Despite going 2-1 without Williams, it is clear that the ceiling of the offense is much higher with the former No. 1 overall pick on the field.
Caleb Williams leads Chicago Bears to a win in return
Williams noted that he had confidence in himself coming back, and he never had lingering concerns during the game.
"I felt confident from the jump,” admitted Williams. “When I get out there, I'm going to feel confident in my leg, in myself, and in my guys and the O-line. So I just let it rip, let these guys go make plays for us, get first downs, and score touchdowns."
Williams hit the ground running. He completed all four of his passes on the Bears' first drive, leading them to a touchdown. He finished the game 30-for-36 for 305 yards with a passing touchdown. With the injured hamstring, he only added three rushing yards. When you can dominate from the pocket as Williams did against the Atlanta Falcons, there is no need to run.
Williams noted that he did not even realize he had such a strong stat line, and that he sees areas to improve on.
"I didn't know I went 30-for-36,” admitted Williams. “I've got to go back and watch the tape. Winning covers up things, and losing shows everything. We'll go back, be true tellers about ourselves, look in the mirror, and figure out what we need to fix and get better at."
Of the six incompletions that Williams threw, four of them were throwaways. While the offense could be run more smoothly to avoid those scenarios, the ball was never in harm's way, the passes were not inaccurate, and they were not dropped.
One of the incompletions was when Williams got hit in the arm as he threw the pass. Another was a poor route by tight end Colston Loveland. Overall, Williams did not really miss a pass.
The sample size is still small, but Williams has played three games for the Bears. They scored 59 points in Week 1. In Week 2, he played the best defense in the NFL in a rainstorm, and he got hurt while attempting to lead the game-winning drive for the Bears.
In Week 6, they got out to a roaring 31-7 lead before the offense halted. The ceiling could be very high with Williams and the Bears once they get into rhythm.
