One of the few negatives coming out of Chicago Bears training camp has been the notable absence of Kyle Monangai in practice. The back is dealing with an injury that has given Chicago an early chance to explore their depth at the position. While there is plenty of time remaining for the playmaker to get healthy ahead of the 2026 season, it still serves as a reminder of a needed signing to offer a bit of future stability at the position.

Starting rusher D'Andre Swift remains on an expiring contract that clearly should be extneded. There isn't one back currently rostered behind Swift with starting experience and the veteran is coming off an impressive 2025 season. The Georgia product offered 1,087 rushing yards and nine touchdowns while providing a surprisingly capable pass catching option out of the backfield.

Monangai's injury serves as a reminder of how reliant the Bears are on Swift to provide balance. A re-signing is deserved and a move that should've already been made in the 2026 offseason. Swift is only 27, leaving every reason to believe that there are a handful of productive seasons remaining for the rusher.

Chicago should erase any questions around his future and make sure that a deal is done before training camp ends. It would fit with the team's clear push to keep controllable pieces on an offense that has the potential to be consistent Super Bowl contenders.

Kyle Monangai's Injury Serves as Bears Reminder to Extend D'Andre Swift

It seems likely that Swift's camp would welcome extension talks taking away injury risks and keeping the star in Ben Johnson's offense. The head coach has a career of elevating rushing talent and Swift hasn't been any different based on last season and the expectations moving forward. Re-signing Swift simply makes far too much sense and pushes Chicago's offense into an even better position.

The bulk of your starting lineup is under team control for the foreseeable future with your starting rusher the lone notable exception. A re-signing is well within Chicago's current cap as the Bears have done well avoiding overpaid deals or locking up their cap with aging players.

Swift doesn't change this with the back clearly being an affordable re-signing. One that Monangai's injury pushes the importance of as the Bears need to keep their current core intact as long as possible. This is especially true of a backfield coming off an incredibly impressive 2025 season.
