The Chicago Bears are in the thick of their organized team activities (OTAs) as the NFL offseason rolls on. Expectations are high for first-year head coach Ben Johnson's squad after missing the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, leaving the Bears needing to have a strong OTA performance if they want fans to feel optimistic about the 2025 campaign.
As OTAs continue league-wide, a handful of Bears free agents are still looking for new homes. That includes a veteran free agent who, unfortunately, is a threat to sign with one of Chicago's NFC North rivals once the current offseason phase wraps up.
Former Bears TE Marcedes Lewis Could Sign With Packers After OTAs
Of the available Bears free agents, there's a good chance tight end Marcedes Lewis could sign with the Green Bay Packers. The 41-year-old pass-catcher revealed on Thursday's edition of FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams" that he's recently been talking with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who's one of his "best friends."
"(LaFleur) FaceTimed me last week and we were kind of talking about it," Lewis said about potentially joining the Packers. "It's just one of those things... I felt like it ended too soon in Green Bay."
Before spending the last two campaigns in Chicago on back-to-back one-year deals, Lewis had spent five seasons (2018-22) with the rival Packers. The former was beloved by Green Bay fans throughout his run as he converted 57 catches into 582 receiving yards and six touchdowns across 81 games, all while being one of the NFL's best blocking tight ends.
During his time with the Bears, Lewis didn't move the needle much offensively, posting a 5-31-1 stat line in 34 outings. Having said that, the ex-UCLA Bruin did provide Chicago with solid protection. He posted Pro Football Focus grades of 73.7 and 68.4 for run blocking and pass protection, respectively, in 2023 before tallying marks of 58.0 and 80.9 in 2024.
While Bears fans wouldn't be happy to see him sign with a hated rival, Lewis potentially re-joining the Packers isn't unfathomable. He also told Kay Adams that the 2025 season will likely be his last in the NFL, so it makes sense that he'd want to finish his career with a team coached by his best friend.
With how fast the offseason is flying by, don't be surprised if the former Bears TE is back wearing a Packers jersey shortly after OTAs end. Fortunately, Chicago will have two chances next season to prove to Lewis that returning to Green Bay is the wrong decision.
