The Chicago Bears are in the second phase of OTAs after having things open up on May 20. Mandatory minicamp will run from June 3 to June 5 before players depart for a few weeks before training camp.
The Bears brought in multiple rookies, and some guys have already stood out. OT Ozzy Trapilo was impressive in Wednesday's practice.
According to Clay Harbor, Trapilo took every snap at left tackle with the 1's on May 28 and "held his own."
Ozzy Trapilo Is Already Standing Out in Practice
Trapilo was drafted with the 56th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. That move may have caught some fans off guard, considering they have Braxton Jones at LT and Darnell Wright at right tackle.
Trapilo was a three-year starter at Boston College, lining up at right tackle, but has the versatility to play on the left side. He's a natural mover with great technique. The 23-year-old quickly gets out of his stance and has the power to move defenders back.
Although Jones has the upper hand to be the starter, nothing is guaranteed. Over the last two seasons, he's had to miss time due to ankle and hamstring injuries. In addition, he's heading into the last year of his deal.
The Bears just handed big deals to Joe Thuney and Drew Dalman this offseason. They likely don't want to pay big bucks to another offensive lineman next offseason and feel like Trapilo could be Jones' succession plan.
Granted, it's still only OTAs, but if Trapilo continues to impress in practice, the Bears could look to move Jones for some draft capital and plug in the rookie.
The next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch. This competition isn't the one that fans expected to see, but Trapilo has flown under the radar since getting drafted in April.
