The time for NFL training camp is almost here. This year's Chicago Bears camp will take place at Halas Hall, yet again, and will begin on July 19 for the 2025 rookie class before the veterans enter the mix three days later. Needless to say, it won't be much longer before the regular season begins.
With head coach Ben Johnson needing to trim his squad down from 90 players to 53 during the next two months, it's safe to say some Bears will have their hearts broken sooner rather than later. While certain Chicago players are on track to survive next month's roster cuts, one veteran receiver likely couldn't buy a roster spot even if he tried.
Bears WR Samori Toure Can't Buy Roster Spot This Offseason
The arrival of wideouts Luther Burden III, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Devin Duvernay pushed several returning Bears WRs down the depth chart, including Samori Toure.
Toure, 27, is a former seventh-round pick by the rival Green Bay Packers in 2022. The ex-Nebraska Cornhusker played 22 games (2 starts) throughout parts of three seasons with the NFC North franchise, hauling in only 13-of-28 targets (46.4%) for 160 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Once his time in Green Bay ended, Toure joined the Bears' practice squad at the end of last year's preseason. Although he didn't end up making any appearances in a Chicago uniform in 2024, that didn't stop general manager Ryan Poles from signing Toure to a reserve/future contract back in January.
While Toure had an outside shot at being the WR5/6 following the 2024 season, his outlook is much worse now that the offseason is in full swing. Duvernay and Zaccheaus both have more experience and higher upside than him, while Burden will be featured often due to his status as a second-round pick.
That's without mentioning returning names like DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and Tyler Scott, who all have experience catching balls from quarterback Caleb Williams. That means there are at least six names ahead of Toure on the Bears' WR depth chart, making his cracking the 53-man roster unlikely at best and highly improbable at worst.
At the end of the day, it's clear Toure can't afford any mistakes in the coming weeks. Otherwise, his Bears tenure could end before the summer is over.
