The Bears currently have 12 wide receivers on the roster, but as with most positions, a few of those guys have no realistic shot at being on the 53-man roster. A few have practice-squad hopes.
It's unclear how many WRs the team will have on the 53-man roster, but six or seven seems reasonable. The Bears will have second-year player Rome Odunze on the active roster, for sure, and rookie Luther Burden is a likely lock. Veteran DJ Moore, of course, is the leader of the receiver room.
WR Tyler Scott Has a Lot to Prove in Bears Training Camp
Where it gets dicey is when it comes to the bottom of the bench. Scott, who has special-teams experience, could be the fourth WR. Or he could be pushed aside by veterans Miles Boykin and Devin Duvernay. Scott might have to show that he's worth keeping as a kick returner in order to earn a spot on this roster.
Consider his stats -- Scott has done relatively little on offense in his first two seasons. In 2023, he caught 17 passes for 168 yards and an average of 9.9 yards. He caught just one pass for 5 yards in 2024.
To be fair, he's also involved in the running game. But the speedy Scott hasn't really moved the needle. In 2023, he carried the ball seven times for 41 yards and an average of 5.9 yards per carry. He did not run the ball in 2024.
His return numbers are better -- five for 108 yards in 2023, and eight for 207 in 2024 -- so that might be how Scott can earn a roster spot. But he hasn't yet shown true touchdown ability.
Scott still hasn't found the end zone.
The Cincinnati product is on notice, thanks to a draft pick and two signings of mid-career veterans. He's going to have to step it up during August if he wants to be a part of this team in September.
The thing is, Scott does have speed, and new head coach Ben Johnson will be revamping the offense. If Scott can find a role (or if the coaches can find it for him), he has a chance to excel as a depth receiver.
That, along with working on returning kicks, might be what Scott needs to do to stick around.
At the very least, Scott will have a chance to prove himself during the preseason. If he does, he could be part of an explosive offense. If Johnson's changes and the new editions work out, as well, the Bears could really have something.
Otherwise, Scott could find himself moving on.
