Bears Are Sneaky Fit for Released Defender with Dennis Allen Ties

The Chicago Bears could use more help in the secondary, which could lead them to sign someone who knows DC Dennis Allen quite well.

It's taken only three games for the Chicago Bears' defense to show it has taken a step back from the Matt Eberflus days. The fans have been critical of new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, even after a big win in Week 3, and it'd be in general manager Ryan Poles' best interest to bolster the unit if he wants a playoff berth.

Fortunately for Ryan Poles, help could be on the way. The Houston Texans shockingly decided to release veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Monday, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, and luring him to the Windy City would make plenty of sense for the Bears, especially given his connection to defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

Bears Must Target DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson After Texans Release

Gardner-Johnson and Johnson actually go a long way. The 27-year-old spent the first three seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints, who drafted him 105th overall in 2019. He's more than familiar with the Bears' defensive coordinator and his schemes, and vice versa.

During his days with the Saints, he made 43 appearances (31 starts), logging 161 tackles (122 solo), 12 quarterback hits, 28 passes defended, one forced fumble, and five picks. The Saints played him at cornerback, safety, and even linebacker, highlighting the versatility that CJGJ could bring to the Windy City.

"He got my career going, I appreciate him... I'm happy for him (landing in Chicago)," Gardner-Johnson said on the CHGO Bears Podcast before the Super Bowl, adding that he was a coach who was always "hard, gritty, and ready to work."

Allen and the Saints eventually traded Gardner-Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. Although the former head coach initially said he didn't regret the deal (h/t NOLA.com's Terrin Waack), time heals all wounds, and the duo might be on the same page after three years apart.

The veteran DB is also familiar with HC Ben Johnson, as Gardner-Johnson spent one year with the Detroit Lions after a brief stint in Philadelphia. He missed most of the season with a pectoral injury, but his familiarity with two of the Bears' coaches makes him a logical pickup for all parties involved.

Star cornerback Jaylon Johnson is looking at a long time on the shelf with a groin injury, and he might even be out for the season. Tyrique Stevenson hasn't done a great job as his replacement, which is why it might be worth taking a flier on a versatile vet like CJGJ. He'd even be a potential upgrade over Kevin Byard III or even Jaquan Brisker if they want to keep playing him at safety.

Allen and Johnson would benefit from an experienced, championship-winning DB who isn't afraid to play multiple positions. If the Bears can find a way to put pen to paper, signing Gardner-Johnson could be the type of sneaky move that saves the season.
