Terrible Bears Injury Break in Week 3 Hurts Dennis Allen the Most

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is already on thin ice with the fans, and losing one of his playmakers will only make it more difficult for him.

When it rains, it pours for the Chicago Bears. Not only did they lose their second game of the season in as many weeks, but they also lost the leader of the secondary.

Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was making his season debut vs. the Detroit Lions after missing the season opener, had to leave the game in the second quarter. As expected, that led to disaster.

Johnson sustained the injury in the offseason, and he later revealed that he had torn his adductor off his pelvic bone. He may have rushed his way back to the field after missing training camp and the preseason, and he will now likely be out for the season, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Jaylon Johnson's Injury Is a Catastrophe for Bears DC Dennis Allen

That spells trouble for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. The Bears just gave up 52 points, the most they've allowed since 2014. They also gave up the most yards per play (8.8) by any team since the 1961 season.

Allen, who was supposed to be a defensive guru, didn't do much to help a unit that usually performed well above average and had plenty of talent. He's already on thin ice, and not having his playmaking cornerback will only make life more difficult for him.

He was outcoached in the second half of the season opener, and after watching the Vikings barely move the chains in Week 2, shutting down J.J. McCarthy in his first career start looks far less impressive now.

Tyrique Stevenson Needs to Step Up or Step Out

Of course, this doesn't all fall on Allen. As responsible as he is for the lack of adjustments, Tyrique Stevenson has also been absolutely brutal in the first two games of the season.

He posed no threat whatsoever to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who looked like prime Jerry Rice and torched him for nine receptions on eleven targets for 115 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The Lions kept going at it, and he just never stood a chance.

Unfortunately, Nahshon Wright didn't fare much better, either, and with Johnson on the shelf for the long run, the front office might need to consider their options and find someone else to hold down the fort in his absence.

Unsurprisingly, the Bears are now giving up the most points in the league (39.5). They're also the fourth-worst team in opposing third-down percentage conversion (31.8 percent), allow the seventh most total yards (387), and have given up the tenth-most passing yards per game (234.0).
