One of the consistent takeaways for the Chicago Bears in the early portion of camp has been how impressive rookie receiver Zavion Thomas has been. CHGBears host Mark Carman noted the biggest takeaways from Chicago's fourth practice, including " Zavion Thomas ton of balls, including TD pass from Tyson Bagent in 2 minute." This is incredibly exciting as the Bears look to shuffle their depth chart at the position behind Luther Burden and Rome Odunze.
Thomas has impressed with his speed and ability to find open space in the first week of camp. With that said, it is important to note that much can change when the pads come on, and the Bears are going to need to see the rookie pass catcher string together consistent reps throughout camp and the preseason to truly give Thomas a role in an offense that is unquestionably stacked.
It isn't just the receiver position but the tight end position where both Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet are expected to play an important role. Add in the presence of both Kyle Monangai and D'Andre Swift, and there is no shortage of weapons on Chicago's roster.
For Thomas, it is telling that the rookie has been able to stand out so consistently in camp, and fans can only hope that this continues into the preseason. The rookie has a real opportunity after the offseason losses at the position have opened the door for Thomas to either become a surprise starter or step into the fourth receiver role.
Bears Can't Help but be Impressed by Hot Start Zavion Thomas is Enjoying
It isn't any secret that Ben Johnson greatly appreciates speed, and Thomas unquestionably would present this skill set in the starting lineup. Add in the attention that Loveland, Odunze, and Burden are going to demand it is easy to argue that Thomas could play his way into a starting role and be able to take advantage of the opportunity by consistently utilizing his speed to get lost behind the defense due to not being among the team's top priorities.
No matter how the competition shakes out, it is exciting to see Thomas off to a great start, and it suggests that some level of involvement in Johnson's offense should be expected. It has been one of the early stories from camp that Chicago fans are unquestionably enjoying.
Whether or not Thomas is able to continue this production once pads come on will be even more telling. If this is the case, it will be undeniable that the rookie deserves a place in the starting lineup for Chicago in Week 1.
