Looking at the current Chicago Bears projected backfield it is fine to have lofty expectations. The rushing attack greatly benefited from the presence of Ben Johnson, with the respected offensive mind providing a level of balance that Chicago hasn't had in recent years. It took pressure off Caleb Williams and allowed the quarterback to take the noted leap a season ago.
With this in mind, there is no reason to think that the franchise isn't going to continue to feature its backs and establish a needed balance. This leads us to looking at the trio of expected backs to make the final roster and what reasonable expectations are moving into the 2026 season.
D'Andre Swift- 1,056 Rushing Yards and Eight Touchdowns
A very similar year to a season ago should be the expectation understanding that the Bears are going to utilize Kyle Monangai often as well as having a pass heavy offense. Swift is going to pile up numbers based on the fact he is a clear fit within the offense and the opportunity that lies ahead based on not being deemed as the biggest threat when opposing teams are attempting to game plan for how to slow the Chicago offense.
It should also be noted here that additional motivation for Swift is clear as the playmaker is heading into a contract year. The Bears would be wise to extend Swift ahead of the season; however, letting it roll into the season offers undeniable motivation for a player who appears poised for a notable payday.
Kyle Monangai- 679 Rushing Yards and Three Touchdowns
The prediction of Monangai taking a slight step back in production isn't based on a lack of talent but two overlooked factors. The first being the fact that the punishing back is no longer going to catch anyone off guard after last year's impressive breakout season. Monangai was clearly surprising the opposing defense with his ferocity and love for contact.
Secondly, it should be noted that there is going to be a heavy focus on the passing game and allowing Williams to cook and take another leap forwrad. This is going to lessen Monangai's impact just a bit while the playmaker remains an incredibly important piece of the offense.
Roschon Johnson- 78 Rushing Yards and Zero Touchdowns
It can be debated whether or not it should be Johnson earning the team's final roster spot at the position based on his underwhelming tenure with the franchise. The clear counter to this is pointing out the lack of an established option to serve as the team's third option, a position that could become incredibly important if injury were to strike.
With that said, we are going to put Johnson in this spot with the playmaker only getting carries in garbage time. Something that isn't likely to change based on the incredible level of trust that Monangai and Swift both earned a season ago.
