Now that the Chicago Bears are ready to get to training camp, it is a good time to see what a projected 53-man roster looks like. Based on the roster assembled, the Bears have key position battles and plenty of players on the bubble. Who makes the cut?
Chicago Bears Roster Overview
Quarterback (3)
Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum
The Bears decide to keep a third quarterback in Keenum because he would get signed off the practice squad if the team left him out there.
Running back (3)
D’Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai, Coleman Bennett
The first potential surprise is Bennett making the team as a rookie UDFA. Still, Roschon Johnson has had many chances, and it is not tied to this coaching staff. They can move on.
Wide Receiver (6)
Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, Kalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas, Scotty Miller, Jahdae Walker
The bigger question is likely whether they keep six, or dedicate the sixth receiver spot to another position. Maurice Alexander could push for a spot, but the team will mostly lean on their top four, so the other two need special teams value.
Tight End (3)
Colston Loveland, Cole Kmet, Sam Roush
With so much depth at tight end, it is hard to justify keeping a fourth.
Offensive Tackles (4)
Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills, Darnell Wright, Theo Benedet
Ozzy Trapilo on PUP**
This is the end of Kiran Amegadjie on the team. The team needs depth options who can start, and Wills and Benedet have the experience.
Interior Offensive Line (6)
Garrett Bradbury, Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, Luke Newman, Logan Jones, Caden Barnett
The first five are locks. Barnett is a rookie UDFA. He makes it over Jordan McFadden, who has experience but lacks potential.
Edge Rusher (4)
Montez Sweat, Austin Booker, Dayo Odeyingbo, Shemar Turner
Daniel Hardy is the odd man out here. This also depends on how they view Turner, who can rush inside and outside.
Interior Defensive Line (5)
Gervon Dexter, Grady Jarrett, Neville Galimore, Kentavius Street, James Lynch
Lynch and Street make it over the rookie Jordan van den Berg. The team needs quality bodies here, as the fifth interior lineman will see snaps.
Linebacker (6)
TJ Edwards, Devin Bush, D’Marco Jackson, Keyshaun Elliott, Noah Sewell, Jack Sanborn
Former draft pick Ruben Hyppolite is going to have a hard time making the team over the six names above him. Perhaps he takes the spot over a sixth receiver.
Cornerback (6)
Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith, Josh Blackwell, Malik Muhammad
Jaylon Jones is another player looking to take that extra roster spot. It is hard to put him above any of the other six names.
Safety (4)
Coby Bryant, Dillon Thieneman, Elijah Hicks, Cam Lewis
One of the rooms with very little debate.
Specialists (3)
Tory Taylor, Cairo Santos, Luke Elkin
These three are locked in.
