The Chicago Bears made major changes to their roster this offseason, but one of the more underrated moves may have been bringing back a familiar name. While additions through free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft received most of the attention, the decision to re-sign Braxton Jones could end up being one of the smartest moves the team made.
The Chicago Bears' re-signing of Braxton Jones is the best move of the offseason
The Bears entered the offseason in a difficult position at left tackle. They had drafted Ozzy Trapilo, and while he showed promise as a rookie, he is now expected to miss the entire 2026 season because of a knee injury. That left Chicago searching for a short-term solution without wanting to make a long-term commitment at the position.
That situation limited their options. Most free-agent tackles were either looking for multi-year deals or came with concerns about declining play. The draft also did not present an easy answer. Spending a high pick on another left tackle would create long-term overlap with Trapilo once he returns, while relying on a late-round rookie to start immediately would be risky.
That is what made Jones such a clean fit for the Bears. He already knows the organization, has experience in the system, and has previously shown he can be a capable starter when healthy. His situation also mirrored Trapilo’s in some ways. Jones attempted to return from injury too early last season, struggled to look fully healthy, and then suffered another setback. Even with that, the Bears were originally prepared to enter last season with Jones as their starting left tackle before the injuries changed things.
The timing also worked in Chicago’s favor financially. Jones was expected to enter the market looking for a larger contract, but injuries and limited playing time made teams hesitant to commit significant money or years to him. The Bears likely expected him to either price himself out of their range or land a longer-term deal elsewhere.
Instead, the softer market allowed Chicago to bring him back on a reasonable one-year contract. That setup works well for both sides.
For the Bears, they get a starting-caliber left tackle who already understands the team and has the motivation to perform. The continuity is important, especially with a young offense and changes elsewhere on the roster. Rather than forcing another inexperienced player into the lineup, the Bears now have a veteran option who has already handled the role before.
For Jones, this becomes a prove-it season. If he stays healthy and performs well, he can re-enter free agency with a much stronger market next offseason. That gives him added motivation while also giving the Bears stability for the current year.
While flashier moves have received more attention, this signing quietly solved one of Chicago’s biggest offseason issues without creating long-term complications. Because of that, re-signing Jones could end up being one of the most important moves the Bears made all offseason.
