Bears offensive tackle depth chart reveals one uncomfortable truth about the position battle

Darnell Wright is locked in, but nearly every other tackle spot still carries questions heading into camp.

Now that the Chicago Bears have signed their free agents and drafted their rookies, the team is looking ahead to mini-camps and training camp. When they set the depth charts for who runs with what team, what will the offensive tackle depth chart look like?

Braxton Jones

As of now, it looks like Braxton Jones is the leader in the competition to start at left tackle. He has the most experience starting on the Bears, and if it were not for an injury, he might have been able to hold down the job throughout the year last season. Someone is going to need to unseat him.

Darnell Wright

Wright is locked down at starting right tackle. The team picked up his fifth-year option, and the only question now is when they will get an extension done. His experience on the Bears will undeniably be an asset as competition for his job increases.

Theo Benedet

Benedet got a chance to start last year and will be in the mix to start again this season. However, everything about how the Bears have handled the tackle position shows you that they are not confident in him yet. Benedet is still raw, and there is still time for him to develop, but that does not mean they want to see him on the field. Because of the openness of the position, he has a legitimate chance to start, but the Bears might only want that if other options do not work out.

Jedrick Wills

Wills appears to be signed, especially because they wanted an insurance plan behind Benedet. Wills has highs that could be considered higher than Jones and he could win a starting job out of training camp. However, he did not play at all last year as he recovered from a serious knee injury, and there are questions about how effective he can be now.

Kiran Amegadjie

Amegadjie is clearly one of the bigger losers to come from the offseason. The team has not trusted him to play, and with a wide-open depth chart, they added Wills and brought back Jones. This project is still not quite living up to the possibility of becoming a starter any time soon and might end up getting cut.

* Ozzy Trapilo

In a perfect world, Trapilo would start, and they would not be considering three or four other options at left tackle. However, he is less likely to play at all this year than be ready for week 1.
