Everything about the Chicago Bears' 2026 offseason has pointed to the complete and utter confidence of the franchise in young receiver Luther Burden. The pass catcher is coming off a solid rookie debut, offering 652 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, what is more encouraging is the fact that there was a surge at the end of the season, with three of the last four games seeing Burden surpass 60 receiving yards and be a trusted weapon for Caleb Williams.
This is a role that Chicago clearly believes is going to expand into a consistent primary weapon based on the team's offseason decisions. DJ Moore is now a Buffalo Bill and depth receivers Devin Duvernay and Olamide Zaccheaus departed in free agency. The only additions of note at the position have been the free agency signing of veteran Kalif Raymond and third-round receiver Zavion Thomas. Both of these moves are in an effort to improve depth and won't replace the lost production of Moore.
Burden is expected to become a star contributor, with this being the clear explanation for Chicago's lack of offseason additions. It should also be noted that both Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland are likely expected to take a leap as well, with there being a trio of young, talented pass catchers for Williams to lean on.
Chicago’s offseason losses could open the door for Luther Burden in year two
Chicago's confidence is incredibly high evidence by the fact that Moore's exit was met with the signing of a third or fourth option and the drafting of Thomas, who projects similarly. The Bears clearly believe that Burden is going to take a leap and become a star in an offense that needs to find a more consistent primary option to help the offense continue to flow.
Williams would benefit from Odunze or Burden taking a leap and becoming the primary star target you can consistently look to when the game is on the line. There is reason to wonder if Burden could quickly become this option based on his speed and big-play ability. As a rookie, the receiver averaged 13.9 yards per reception, pointing to how impactful Burden can be.
If there is one obvious area of needed improvement, it is reliable hands with Burden dropping five passes in the 2025 season. Part of taking the next step and validating Chicago's obvious confidence is eliminating this obvious weakness. If Burden can accomplish this, there is no reason to doubt the receiver will take a year two leap, leaning on the talent of Williams and benefiting from the genius of Ben Johnson.
