Bears GM Makes First Comments After Matt Eberflus Firing
By Joe Summers
The Bears officially sent head coach Matt Eberflus packing after Chicago's latest nightmare loss, and now general manager Ryan Poles and president Kevin Warren have made their first public comments following the move.
Eberflus had obviously lost the locker room and trust of fans, necessitating a change. Chicago curiously let Eberflus handle a press conference on Friday morning mere hours before the firing, but it was the right decision regardless.
Based on these comments, it's obvious the front office no longer believed in the coach it hired.
Bears GM Ryan Poles Breaks Silence on Matt Eberflus Firing
"This morning, after meeting with (owner) George (McCaskey) and Kevin (Warren)," Poles said, "we informed Matt (Eberflus) of our decision to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team and the head-coaching position."
The brief statement might be a signal of Poles' growing pressure too. He's failed to identify the correct coach for this franchise and could be considered lucky to have the opportunity to pick the next one.
"I support Ryan and the decision that was made this morning," Warren said regarding the move. "We understand how imperative the head coaching role is for building and maintaining a championship-caliber team, leading our players and organization."
Eberflus was a disaster by any measure. He accumulated a 30.4% winning percentage during his three seasons, going 2-13 in divisional games and 5-19 in one-score contests.
This was the only decision Poles could make to save himself, though the focus now needs to center around saving Caleb Williams and a talented roster. The upcoming offseason will determine the success of Williams' precious rookie contract, so here's hoping the Bears find the right hire.
