Bears Did Matt Eberflus Dirty With Shocking Move Before Friday Firing

The Chicago Bears reportedly fired Matt Eberflus after having him speak to the media on Friday morning.

After dropping their sixth consecutive game to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was front and center for his day-after press conference on Friday.

Eberflus spoke to the media after showing major coaching incompetence on the Bears’ final offensive possession. He shockingly did not call a timeout despite seeing his team flounder in the final moments of the fourth quarter.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin asked the third-year head coach about his job status and he said, “I’m confident I’ll be working to San Francisco and coaching that game.”

However, the Bears’ front office had other ideas as Eberflus was fired, making him the first head coach in Chicago’s 100-plus year history to be let go in-season, per Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports.

The Bears’ ownership made the right move to let go of Eberflus after yesterday’s loss, but the fact they still let him do his day-after press conference is embarrassing. Before Eberflus spoke with reporters on Friday, there was a brief moment of uncertainty about if he would show up.

He showed up at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT and was immediately handed his walking papers two hours later, which tells me that Bears leadership made their decision about Eberflus likely after that disastrous showing on national television.

If that’s the case, the Bears shouldn’t have had Eberflus go out there to speak with the media on Friday. The optics don’t look great, but it's almost a perfect microcosm of how things have gone this season for the Bears.

Between the team meetings, poor play execution, and now Eberflus getting fired after speaking this morning, the Bears have much to figure out over the next few months.
