The Chicago Bears have understandably high expectations for Colston Loveland after a rookie season that saw the pass catcher finish with 713 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Fans know that these numbers don't tell the full story, with Caleb Williams often looking for the tight end at the end of games when things were tight. Loveland had the trust of the quarterback, and one obvious reason for this was pointed out this past week.

PFSN's Jacob Infante noted, "In the 21st century, there have been 28 tight ends in the NFL with 60+ targets in their rookie season. Bears TE Colston Loveland's 1.7% drop rate is the lowest of ALL of them. Elite hands." This is an incredible stat that points to just how reliable Loveland was in his rookie season and why expectations continue to build moving forward. There will also be a far larger opportunity based on the team's offseason decisions.

DJ Moore's landing with the Buffalo Bills opened up a large volume of targets that will give Loveland a chance to surpass 1,000 yards for the first time and perhaps become the primary target. Regardless of the answer, it is clear that the franchise is just scratching the surface when it comes to Loveland's potential impact.

Bears Fans Have Reason for Excitement as Expectations Around Colston Loveland Grow

Growing expectations are fair when you look at the evidence at hand and realize everything about Loveland's rookie season screams incredible reliability. Whether it is the catch percentage or showing up late when the game was on the line, Loveland clearly has a clutch gene that is going to make the tight end an elite weapon for the Bears for years to come.

It was also incredibly telling that Williams trusted Loveland so early in his career despite having far more reps with veteran targets. This tells fans that what they are seeing at the end of games was showing up in practice and growing a clear chemistry between two cornerstones of Chicago's organization.

For Loveland, there should be a leap in production based on this chemistry, as well as the fact that you have a better chance for targets based on offseason moves. The hype is unquestionably warranted and speaks to a young player who is ready to take a year two leap after a surprising rookie season.

One that was accomplished while playing with Cole Kmet and a crowded receiver depth chart that still didn't take away Loveland's ability to deliver in the clutch. All of this adding up to the fact that Loveland should be considered Chicago's most reliable target and poised for a huge 2026 season.
