With Caleb Williams set to miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury, Ben Johnson turned to Tyson Bagent to host fellow former Detroit Lions assistant coach Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets.
As expected, the home team was the better team in every facet of the game, and while it took a while longer than some thought, the Bears ultimately made it clear on the field. Eventually, the final score marked Bears 23-12 Jets.
All things considered, this was a near-perfect game by Ben Johnson's team, even against lesser competition. So, without further ado, let's talk winners and losers from the Bears' third win of the campaign.
Main standouts from the Bears' win over Jets
Winner: Rome Odunze
Rome Odunze hadn't done much to separate himself from the rest of the pack this season. That's hard to do with so many weapons around you, but it was still nice to see him take a step forward for a change.
Odunze was second on the team in targets (7) and tied for the most receptions (6). He led both teams with 94 receiving yards, and while he didn't find paydirt, this might be the performance he needed to get going.
Winner: Kyle Monangai
Klye Monangai went absolutely nuts in this one, proving that his strong start to the season wasn't a fluke. The Bears' backup running back ultimately led the team in carries (30), with the Jets having no response for his aggressive downhill running.
Monangai averaged 4.9 yards per carry, and he finished the game with 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also had one reception for four yards, and he might be the most underrated running back in the game right now.
Winner: Colston Loveland
While the fans and the team continue to wait for Colston Loveland's breakout, the second-year tight end showed signs of life in this one, and he's slowly but steadily been getting more involved in the game.
Loveland drew the most targets (9) in this one, so they clearly wanted to get him going. He finished the game with six grabs for 57 yards, and even though that's still far below expectations, he's clearly trending in the right direction.
Winner: Dennis Allen
Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen entered the season with a lukewarm seat. So far, his aggressive defense has looked much better than expected, especially considering the lack of prime reinforcements.
Allen's defense is doing just fine after Gervon Dexter's departure, and the Bears absolutely crushed everything Geno Smith and the Jets had in store for them. They held them to seven first downs, 0-of-7 on third down, and 157 total yards.
Winner: Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson continues to prove that he's much more than just a stacked team. Yes, the Bears have plenty of weapons, but he's now won games with three different starting quarterbacks this season, and the offense continues to look sharp regardless of who's under center.
Moreover, he took down one of his former assistant coaches. He coached against Aaron Glenn's defenses for years, so beating him now that they're both head coaches must add an extra layer of satisfaction.
Loser: Tyson Bagent
The Jets hadn't picked off a pass since the Kennedy administration, and that streak ended with Tyson Bagent. He could've had two passes intercepted today, but one was negated by a penalty. Even so, this goes well beyond that.
Bagent had an opportunity to make his case for other teams to try to poach him as a potential starter. Instead, the debate about whether Case Keenum should start in Caleb William's absence lives on for another week.
