The Chicago Bears soundly defeated the New York Jets on Sunday, with running back Kyle Monangai leading the way. Bears head coach Ben Johnson was sneaky this time around, sending veteran Case Keenum onto the field to start the opening drive, and then immediately removed him in favor of Bagent after only a single play.
After much speculation throughout the week, most pundits and fans alike were expecting Tyson Bagent to start the game despite Keenum's spectacular performance against the Eagles in Week 3. Sending Keenum to the field threw a monkey wrench into the Jets plans, and kept them on their toes. By holding his cards to his chest and not revealing the starter, he's caused the Jets to do twice the preparation.
The Bears dominated on the time of possession, holding the game for nearly twice as long as the Jets.
In the absence of Breece Hall, the Jets were largely unable to get any semblance of a run game going, only totaling 59 yards on the day. When you place that in comparison to the Bears 232 yards, the time of possession begins to show much clearer.
Kyle Monangai was the star of the show
The star of the game was most certainly Kyle Monangai, who posted an impressive 146 yards a 2 touchdowns on the day. Quarterback Tyson Bagent also had an impressive start, throwing for 268 yards, no touchdowns and only a lone interception. On 34 attempts, Bagent completed 25 of them, hitting nine separate receivers in the process.
That's exactly what the Bears needed from their third starter of the season. He did the backup quarterbacks job, and kept the team afloat for yet another week.
It's difficult to walk away from watching this one without supreme confidence in Ben Johnson and the Bears. After their upset victory over Philadelphia in Week 3, many though Case Keenum should be the guy to start to keep his hot streak going. But if this game proved anything, it's that the Bears have one of the most established quarterback rooms in the game.
With that amount of confidence at our backs, who's ready to waltz into Green Bay next week?
