There is no doubt that undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent has been the flavor of the month in regard to the Chicago Bears Pre-Season.

Bagent has impressed in each of the Bears’ first two Pre-Season games and that had led to some to be the foolish idea that the rookie quarterback should not only open the season on the Bears’ 53-man roster but should be the backup quarterback to Justin Fields.

That would be where the Bears fans are missing the point in regard to where things stand in regard to the team’s quarterback room.

Let’s first establish rule No. 1: If Justin Fields takes the expected leap forward, it won’t matter where Bagent goes after this Pre-Season. Fields, if he reaches his true potential, is going to be an annual candidate to be the MVP of the NFL.

Bagent, if he reaches his true potential, is going to be a backup quarterback that will be capable of holding a clipboard for many years to come. An undrafted quarterback that played college in Division II is not ready to be a backup quarterback in the NFL during his rookie season.

And, not to take away from Bagent’s performance this month but the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts did not gameplan for the quarterback. To that end, Bagent wasn’t facing an NFL-caliber defense.

If forced into a position where he was playing against an NFL-caliber defense and being game planned against, then we would see the gap between where he currently is at against where he needs to be.

Chicago Bears fans have lost focus of the Tyson Bagent discussion.

What Bagent has done is proved that he may be a nice developmental quarterback to have on the practice squad but not at the expense of forcing another player off the 53-man roster such as Trevis Gipson.

To that end, the Bears sneaking Bagent through waivers will not nearly be the Mission Impossible-level task that fans are making it out to be. NFL teams will not be submitting a waiver claim on an undrafted quarterback that has played against backups to the backups in three-quarters of Pre-Season games.

Now, there is a very legitimate concern to be had with PJ Walker being the backup quarterback to Fields. Bagent is not the solution to that concern nor is it related. Again, Bagent is not at the point where he can start an NFL regular season game and the team has confidence that he can tread water.

If, on the off chance, the Bears did lose Bagent due to waivers, it won’t matter for the team. Sure, it would be a disappointment to lose the opportunity to continue developing Bagent on the practice squad but in the grand scheme of what this season means, it wouldn’t move the needle in even the slightest direction.

Bagent has been a fun story for the Pre-Season but the reality is he will be a forgotten name by this time next season.
