Spurs select G Cole Anthony, NORTH CAROLINA

I would be very interested to see what Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich can do with this son of an NBA player.

Cole Anthony was the player that caught my attention right out of the gate with a 34-point masterpiece to open the season. His overall talent is clear, but his decision making is clearly lacking. That being said, who else could make someone a smarter player like Popovich?

The biggest red flags for Anthony come from his shot selection, his decision making, and his health.

He shot below 40 percent on the season (38.0) and was under 35 percent on his threes (34.8) in the games he played, and was a part of a team that Roy Williams dubbed “the least gifted team” he had ever coached.

The decision making is a bigger deal than the other two, given that Anthony is listed as a point guard. He averaged four assists with 3.5 turnovers per game.

Obviously, Anthony’s arthroscopic surgery on his right knee was big news when it happened in mid-December and he admitted to only playing a handful of games at 100 percent.

Defensively, I think Anthony is underrated. He is an extremely quick athlete who can disrupt passing lanes, as evidenced by his averaging over a steal per game and confirmed if you’ve ever seen him play.

Obviously, he’ll need work but when completely healthy, Cole Anthony is an explosive athlete with the ability to play both guard positions and attack the basket with ferocity.

With a more keen offensive approach and a great coach, he can be a part of something special on a transitioning Spurs team.
