Kings select F Isaac Okoro, AUBURN

Isaac Okoro is a good forward, but I will believe he will slip into the late lottery to Sacramento.

This pick definitely appalls some of the experts out there, being that Okoro is ranked as the best wing in this class. Now while he is probably the best wing DEFENDER, I take issue that he could be ranked over a player with a higher upside like Devin Vassell.

Okoro is ridiculously long and athletic, and standing at 6-6, could shut down a few starting wings in the NBA starting day one. However, he is extremely limited in almost everything else he brings to the table.

Starting with his offense, he can cut and run in transition, but so can guys like the Bulls’ Chandler Hutchison, and we all know that Hutch is a borderline bust at this moment in time.

Okoro can finish, no doubt about it with his nearly-68 percent field goal percentage at the cup…but he also doesn’t do anything much further than five feet from the basket.

He didn’t average a ton of points this past year (12.8) and isn’t a great rebounder for his position (4.4). Take all of that with the fact that his pro comparison is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

So, yeah. I’m not a big Okoro fan if you couldn’t tell.

However…

His defensive capabilities would tremendously help a Kings team that ranked 19th in total defensive rating last year.

His athleticism might also make him a lob target for De’Aaron Fox and there is always a chance that Okoro could develop a workable jump shot and become more serviceable in the Kings’ offense.

This could end up being a steal if Okoro does his part.
