With 32 starts over a four-year period, it wasn’t too long ago that Artie Burns was viewed as being the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback of the future. Burns played like one as well, with three interceptions and 13 pass breakups.

During his second season, he’d become a full-time starter and manage to put up similar stats with 13 pass breakups and one interception. However, it’s in 2018 where Burns’ career would take a downward spiral and he’d start just one game in 2019.

When the Bears signed Burns to a one-year deal during free agency, the motive was simple: Add more competition to a cornerback room that already features Tre Roberson, rookie Jaylon Johnson, and Kevin Toliver. Right now, many are under the assumption that Johnson will be the starter. However, if he’s not fully healthy, Burns could have a chance to lock the starting job up.

Even if Burns isn’t playing opposite Fuller in 2020, he could very well move inside and play in the slot in 2021. If the Bears move on from veteran Buster Skrine next offseason, they could bring Burns back on another cheap deal.
