How will Mitch get better?

Interconnected to the previous two questions is this one — how will Mitch Trubisky get any better this offseason? In light of the truncated offseason and the likelihood that teams will have little to no time together in the preseason to prepare as a unit, it is a legitimate question.

Trubisky’s work ethic and intangibles have never been in question. He works as hard as anyone else on the team and clearly wants to be a better quarterback. In order to do that, he needs to, as Matt Nagy said, learn to be a master at reading coverages.

That, however, becomes exponentially more difficult when you don’t have the opportunity to take live repetitions. It is one thing to study film and be able to recognize a pre-snap coverage, or even see how a team might roll into another coverage after the snap. It is entirely another to do it in real-time and train your mind and body how to react. That simply cannot happen so long as he remains in quarantine.

It is the main reason why I believe Foles will win the competition. I believed that to be the case even with a full offseason. However, without those opportunities, it will be very difficult for Mitch to improve in the areas he needs to. Consequently, you have to think the edge goes to the quarterback who already has that ability, is familiar with the offense, and is less likely to be impacted by the shortened offseason.
