Which WR will be the odd man out?

Many Bears fans thought the team would select a wide receiver in the second round, identifying Denzel Mims, Brandon Aiyuk, Jalen Reagor, and KJ Hamler as possibilities. As we know, they didn’t select one until the fifth round when they took Darnell Mooney. But hey, at least they took one (I’m looking at you Green Bay).

In doing so, the Bears got their speed guy to take the top off the defense to replace Taylor Gabriel. However, it seems, perhaps, they want to give him time to develop and bring him along slowly because they just recently signed speedster Ted Ginn to a one-year deal.

This creates a bit of a logjam at the wide receiver position, and it looks like Ginn, Javon Wims, Riley Ridley, and recently signed Trevor Davis. With the addition of safety Tashaun Gipson, formerly of the Houston Texans, the Bears do not have a free roster spot. Despite the likelihood of creating more spots with the release of some tight ends, their roster will evolve and it is still likely one of the above-mentioned receivers will not make the cut.

Ridley would seem to be safe, considering where he was drafted, and Ginn as the speedy veteran would also seem to be a lock. That means it is likely down to Wims and Davis. The Bears don’t have much invested in Wims, the former seventh-round pick, and Davis adds some versatility in that he can play special teams. If Wims doesn’t step up his game this offseason, he could be the odd man out.
