Kyle Long

I’ll admit it. I am a huge homer when it comes to Kyle Long. I fully believe that, when he’s healthy, Long is one of the very best guards in football. I still truly believe so.

That’s why this year is so important for him. For whatever reason, Long hasn’t been able to stay completely healthy for a few years now. The fact of the matter is, he very well could end up becoming a cap casualty starting next year.

I hate the thought of seeing Long in another uniform. I can’t do it. He belongs in Chicago. He’s given so much to this team and community. He belongs in a Bears jersey.

For that reason, this summer is key for Long. Staying healthy, staying strong and getting reps — that’s what it’s all about.

The Bears went out and brought back Ted Larsen. They have high hopes for Alex Bars, an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. They have to have a backup plan in place. Not only that, but they may even be planning for a future without Long.

It hurts to hear, and it hurts just as much to write those words. I love the guy. He’ll always be one of my favorite Bears to ever walk out on Soldier Field. That’s why I’m praying he stays healthy and looks strong come training camp.
