Chicago Bulls: Ranking the NBA’s top 10 young cores
After finally committing to a full rebuild, the Memphis Grizzlies have positioned themselves very well to become an up and coming NBA franchise.
The Grizzlies made the first move towards a rebuilding process at the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline, when the team dealt long-time center Marc Gasol to Toronto, where he would eventually win his first NBA Championship. Although the Grizzlies didn’t get much in return for the Spaniard, taking that first step in blowing up the team was crucial.
2019-2020 did not go how Memphis expected, as the team was one of the best in the Western Conference early in the season. Nonetheless, the Grizzlies ended up in the lottery again but found massive luck in jumping all the way to the second overall selection. Following this, the world expected Memphis to take Murray State’s Ja Morant and deal franchise player Mike Conley to finally fully commit to the rebuild.
Right before the 2019 NBA Draft, Memphis moved Conley to Utah in what turned out to be a very decent haul for the Grizzlies. However, where Memphis truly hit a home run was in the 2019 NBA Draft, where the team was able to select both Ja Morant and Brandon Clarke in the first round, both of which were considered top-twelve talents.
Along with the phenomenal NBA Draft had by Memphis, the team already drafted Jaren Jackson Jr. in the 2018 NBA Draft, a very high-ceiling young player. The Grizz have surrounded him with players like Grayson Allen, Dillon Brooks, Tyler Dorsey, and Josh Jackson.
With regards to youth movements in the NBA, Memphis had a very sneaky good offseason and expedited their rebuild immensely via good drafting and trading. It will be exciting to see how Ja Morant play in his first season and if he can live up to high expectations set for him. If he does meet them, expect Memphis to fly up young core rankings.
