Chicago Bears: 5 takeaways from veteran minicamp
By Ryan Heckman
Skill players will be jumbled into a single, glorious and gigantic group.
We heard a lot from running back Tarik Cohen this week on how different the offense is going to be. The big news with Cohen was that he mentioned he will be playing at receiver quite often. But, he also talked about how diverse of a group they have on offense and that players will line up all over the place.
"“Right now, I see a lot of versatility. You know, not with just myself … with the tight ends, the other running backs as well … The coaches have really emphasized that not only I will be moving around a lot, but the other players will too.” “They’ve seen what I can do already at running back … even though I’m still out there at running back, you know … it’s just right now, more receiver, and I’m just getting ready.”"
Looking at, specifically, the tight end group, Nagy will be using them much differently than they are all typically used to being used. Trey Burton will be lining up with his hands in the dirt, spread out wide, in the slot as well as in the back field at times. He’s going to be playing the role of Travis Kelce in Chicago.
A guy like Taylor Gabriel will also be lining up all over the place, which should be fun to see. Gabriel is known for his speed, so Nagy will be using him not just as a receiver, but likely as a runner at some point as well.
Even Allen Robinson may get a shot to carry the ball once and a while, with his speed. This offense is going to be fun, and Nagy talked a lot about using each and every one of his players’ strengths when implementing the new offense. The man has a vision, that’s for sure.
