The Chicago Bulls should be looking high and low to acquire young and potentially impact talent. Buying low on Orlando Magic big man Bismack Biyombo is an intriguing idea.

There is no mistake about it, the Chicago Bulls have started a massive rebuild. Trading away Jimmy Butler was just the first step. Now, the Bulls need to find a way to build the roster pretty much from scratch.

They do have some interesting young players on the roster, but nobody who is guaranteed to be an impact player down the line. With this in mind, I would like to see the Bulls shake it up some more. Take some chances on some underdeveloped talent. Buy low on an overpriced player or two. This team is a mess and they should not hesitate to make some aggressive moves, as long as it does not significantly impact their flexibility for the future.

As I looked around the league for potential buy low targets for the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic big man Bismack Biymobo immediately stood out.

More from Chicago Bulls

Biymobo was an extremely raw prospect, who the Charlotte Bobcats acquired with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Biymobo was a fantastic defensive prospect who showed elite rim protection and rebounding upside. However, his offensive game was extremely ugly.

Big year in Toronto

Biymobo never really reached his potential with Charlotte and eventually found himself signing a modest free agent contract with the Toronto Raptors. Biymobo really hit his stride with the Raptors, showing incredible defensive prowess and an ability to score in transition and finish around the rim. He was particularly impressive in the post season for the Raptors, cleaning up the glass and dominating on the defensive end of the court.

After only one year in Toronto, Biymobo hit the open market and got paid by the Magic. Orlando signed Biymobo to a four-year, $72 million contract. It was a baffling move by the Magic, considering they already had a lot of front court option. Biymobo struggled in Orlando last season, but I think the inconsistent playing time had a lot to do with it.

More from Da Windy City

He is still an extremely long and athletic big man who does a lot of things well. He is an elite rebounder and rim protector who also has the speed to switch on the perimeter. Biyombo is never going to be an offensive force, but he runs the court well and can finish around the hoop. Oh yeah, and he’s still only 24 years old.

Bad contract

Basically, the Magic know they made a mistake when they signed Biyombo. Plus, they still owe him $51 million over the next three years. Acquiring Biyombo would be risky, but there is still a lot to like about his game. Buying low on him and making him their full-time center would be an interesting move.

The biggest issue for the Chicago Bulls here is Biyombo’s contract. Obviously, it is a big commitment. However, the Bulls have Robin Lopez on the roster at similar money for the next two years. Would a Robin Lopez for Biyombo trade be something that makes sense? I think it could.

I could see the Magic biting the bullet and making a trade like this. Lopez could be their backup center for the next two years and his contract runs out a year before Biyombo’s. Perhaps the Bulls could add a minor piece like Cameron Payne to the mix to get the deal done.

Make no mistake about it, trading for Biyombo would be risky. However, he is still a very young player with an exciting skill set who fits the modern NBA well. Dumping Lopez would also help limit the financial burden of acquiring Biyombo for the Bulls.
