On one hand, Butler is the player that the Bulls should build around. Butler is on a friendly contract considering his maximum contract came before the NBA salary cap increased due to the new television contract. Butler has also taken his game to new levels where he is now capable of carrying a team offensively.
On the other hand, there is Hoiberg. Hoiberg was handpicked by Bulls’ general manager Gar Forman to replace former head coach Tom Thibodeau. Essentially, Hoiberg is the puppet to the front office that Thibodeau never would have been. Due to Hoiberg’s status as a puppet, the former Iowa State head basketball coach has lost control of the locker room. Not only has Hoiberg lost control of the locker but the Bulls’ players have no faith in their head coach. Hoiberg has three years remaining on his contract after this season.
The player that has been the most outspoken of Hoiberg has been Butler. Butler has constantly been critical of Hoiberg for, well, not actually coaching the team.

For a NBA franchise to be successful, their franchise player and head coach must be in sync. Clearly, that Is not the case with Hoiberg and Butler. Therefore, the Bulls must decide between Butler or Hoiberg this off-season.
Here’s the issue with that, if Forman is the one making the decision then there is no need to even continue. Forman and Hoiberg are tied at the hip. If Hoiberg if fired, then there is a strong chance that Forman will be fired as well. Forman is not intelligent when it comes to basketball operations but even he should be smart enough to realize that he can’t fire his handpicked puppet without jeopardizing his own job.
That would leave the Bulls with the option of trading Butler. Trading Butler would be a mistake as not only would that completely set the Bulls back but their reputation would be damaged beyond repair. That is why the Bulls can’t let Forman make the decision. Forman is as big as a problem as Hoiberg is. The Bulls need to fire Hoiberg because that is the only way that real and effective change will occur to the team.
