The Chicago Bears will address the quarterback position this off-season but will it be for the long-term?

It’s a certainty that the Chicago Bears will address the quarterback position this off-season.

Currently, Jay Cutler is the only quarterback on the roster for the 2017 season. But, the overwhelming expectation is that the Bears will move on from Cutler at some point prior to the 2017 season. There is no more guaranteed money left on Cutler’s contract and that makes the time right for the two sides to part ways.

Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, and Connor Shaw are free agents. Chances are the Bears will attempt to bring back at least two of those three quarterbacks. Regardless of who of their quarterbacks that they bring back, the Bears are going to need a long-term answer at the position. But will the Bears attempt to address their long-term need for a quarterback this off-season?

Opinions vary when it comes to the quarterback class for the 2017 NFL Draft. Clemson’s DeShaun Watson, Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer, and North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky are the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft. Being that the Bears hold the third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, the they will have the opportunity to select at least one of those quarterbacks. However, the Bears will not be compelled to select a quarterback with their first-round selection.

Examine Ryan Pace’s first two drafts as general manager of the Bears. Not a single quarterback was taken by Pace. What does that tell you about the Bears’ general manager? That says that Pace is not going to draft a quarterback for the mere purpose of drafting a quarterback because the position is a need. If Pace does not like Kizer, Trubisky or Watson, then he will not select them. The decision that Pace makes at the quarterback position will likely be his defining moment as general manager of the Bears. Therefore, Pace is not going to put his name behind a player that he does not believe in.
