The Chicago Bears understand the pain of having former head coach and current Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus make meaningful decisions. Eberflus went 14-32 as Chicago's head coach and always seemed to lack meaningful adjustments or any answers. One season without the head coach, and the Bears are not only in playoff contention but have the inside track to winning the NFC North. For the Cowboys, one of the league's worst defensive units has held back a team that is one Philadelphia Eagles win away from being eliminated.
It seems that it will be Eberflus who pays for the Cowboys missing the playoffs, with a report from ESPN's Todd Archer reporting that the coordinator will be moved to the booth for the final three games of the season. This was quickly replied to, speculating that this was a preemptive firing. This is far from a hot take when you consider just how much Eberflus has struggled since leaving Dallas.
The coach has been in charge of a defense that has given up the most passing yards in the league per game. Add in the fact that Dallas gives up 30 points per game and simply has zero answers when the game is on the line, and it would be shocking not to see Eberflus let go after the final three weeks of the season.
Former Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus Headed for Obvious Dallas Exit
For the Bears, this is simply confirmation of what the fan base and franchise already knew. While Eberflus has an impressive initial resume, spending time with the Indianapolis Colts as a defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, building a solid enough performance to earn the head coaching role in Chicago. However, it is fair to wonder how much of this was accurate based on what followed with both the Bears and Cowboys.
Dallas parting ways with the DC would continue to push his career in the wrong direction, likely setting up another demotion. It is hard to see a team willingly bringing in Eberflus for another chance at a defensive coordinator role, and there is zero chance teams consider a head coaching role. With this in mind, it seems that a lesser role on a defensive staff is the likely path.
Eberflus started his NFL career as a linebackers coach with the Cleveland Browns and Cowboys, a role that he would likely return to if his career is going to continue. There is the chance as well that the coach opts for a college return. Regardless, it is clear that the coach is heading for a quick exit from the Cowboys, one that is deserved based on continual struggles and a familiar theme for Chicago fans, an inability to adjust.
