Despite not having a superstar pass rusher, the Chicago Bears are averaging a decent 2.8 sacks per game, tied for the seventh-most in the league. Imagine what they could do with some veteran help arriving soon.
That's why general manager Ryan Poles should be working the phones right now. Everything worked in the Bears' favor in Week 6, and bringing Khalil Mack back to the Windy City shouldn't be too complicated.
The Los Angeles Chargers lost again, the Bears will miss Montez Sweat for another game and are still missing Dayo Odeyingbo, and Mack is still one of the best in the game. What's not to like or even think about here?
The Chicago Bears can't be outbid for Khalil Mack
No team has ever made the playoffs after starting the season 0-6. And, with all due respect, there's nothing about Jim Harbaugh's team that makes the fans or analysts believe that they're anywhere close to figuring things out. If anything, they might be closer to blowing things up.
That's where the good-old Bears can give them a hand. Mack is on an expiring deal and potentially even in the final season of his career. Why not get something in return for his services before either shutting him down for the season with a non-existent injury or letting him walk?
Mack had a solid run in Chicago before taking things up a notch in Los Angeles. He was pretty good except for his final, injury-riddled season. And just when it looked like he was done, he got back on his feet and reminded everyone why he's one of the premier headhunters of his generation.
Even this season, he's been the lone bright spot in the Chargers' defense. Over six games, he's logged 19 total tackles (11 solo), five tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, 3.0 sacks, 16 total pressures, and 10 run stops.
The Bears' defense has held its own pretty well this season, but 'pretty well' may not cut it in the stacked NFC North. He can be a mentor for the rising Austin Booker, and his ability to contribute in coverage and in the running game is extremely rare for a player in his position.
Given the Chargers' situation, a fifth-round pick might be just enough to bring the future Hall of Famer back to Chicago. He deserves an opportunity to go out with a bang by playing for a contender, and the Bears could always use some help on defense.
