One of the biggest things to watch from the preseason was whether Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent could end up being a trade chip for a quarterback-hungry team. Bagent had some ups, but enough downs in the preseason opener that it is hard to think any team would give up something significant enough for the Bears to trade him.Â
Chicago Bears Are Unlikely to Trade Tyson Bagent
The Bears were adamant this offseason that if any team was willing to give a strong offer to make Bagent a starting quarterback, they would listen. The Bears kept Bagent, so it appeared as though no one bit on the bait. This is a player with three touchdowns and six interceptions in his NFL career, after all.Â
Now, the hope was that Bagent would play well in the preseason and that would drum up some trade interest. While Bears fans think he played well enough for other teams to give them a haul in return, the other teams were unlikely to be as impressed.
Bagent started with a couple of three-and-outs and then threw an interception. As the defense started to get into their depth, the backup started to thrive. He threw a touchdown nearing the end of the first half. One touchdown drive against backups in an entire half with a 59% completion rate is not having teams falling over themselves, throwing assets away.
For comparison, the Pittsburgh Steelers saw their rookie quarterback throw for 153 yards and two touchdowns with a 76% completion rate in his NFL debut. They are done entertaining Bagent offers for now.
The New York Jets' rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 71% of his passes in his NFL debut, averaging eight yards per attempt. Bagent averages 7.2 yards per attempt in his preseason career and was at 7.7 yards in the preseason opener.Â
Anthony Richardson looked good for the Colts, and they will want to see what he can do. Carson Beck had a promising debut in Arizona, and the Browns just saw Bagent struggle in the first half of a preseason game against them. It is hard to find any team willing to trade for Bagent at this point.
The Bears have done everything they can to try to get a deal for Bagent. They want it to come off as them looking to do what is right by Bagent, but they seem to be looking to dump him on a sucker who wants to take him, given how they are discussing him.
