Chicago Bears backup quarterback apparently sustained a hamstring injury during Saturday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. Bagent wasn't spotted on the field for practice following Monday's off day, and his status for the upcoming matchup this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals is now in question.

Bagent has been a highly touted backup quarterback in the league since joining the Bears, and he even became the first Bears' quarterback to get an extension since Jay Cutler over a decade ago. He's garnered trade interest from several teams, but general manager Ryan Poles has named a high price for Bagent.

Bagent had a rocky performance in Saturday's matchup, though he finished the game with a touchdown pass, an interception, and completed 12 of 22 for 169 yards. It wasn't perfect, but had he been given the rest of the game, he could have had more time to improve on it. The thing is, Bagent was only expected to play the first half, so nobody payed a second glance when Case Keenum took the field for the latter part of the game.

Tyson Bagent’s injury puts his preseason showcase on hold

With Bagent out, his time in the spotlight could potentially be on hold. It's important in these moments to not speculate too much until we've heard from the team. Many outlets are going to spin this into something absolutely major, but it could just be a minor injury. All we're working with at this time is a few tweets, and no actual confirmation from the team.

It's still the preseason, and Bagent is still a highly valued asset. Chicago has no reason to rush him back to the field if he's not actually healthy enough to do so. His contract extension proves that he's a part of the Bears' future plans regardless of any trade values or inquisitions.

The attention will naturally fall to Case Keenum if Bagent doesn't take the field this week at camp, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Keenum is an accomplished quarterback himself, having gone as an undrafted free agent in 2012, and to still be around in the league today.

Saturday is just a preseason game. It's outcome is far less important than establishing who Caleb Williams' primary backup will be, and that he's entirely healthy when the moment comes. The Bears can afford to be patient with Bagent now, but they cannot afford to enter the regular season without complete confidence in Williams' insurance policy.
