David Peterson isn't exactly having a Cy Young year as a starting pitcher in 2026. The Cubs left hander arrived in Chicago after being acquired back at the end of June for minor league infielder Cole Mathis. Peterson has posted a 5.80 ERA with the Mets and the Cubs this season, and things don't seem to be getting much better. In 26.2 innings with the Cubs, he's given up 22 hits, 15 earned runs, and four home runs.
The Cubs have been desperate for starting pitching, and the transaction wire supports this. A plethora of names have graced the mound for the Cubs this season, more than any other team in baseball. It's looking like they'll be adding more as we approach the trade deadline on Monday, August 3rd.
The Cubs cannot settle for this version of Peterson
Everyone is aware that the Cubs have been in a dire situation when it comes to pitching. Manager Craig Counsell has been dealing what he can with what he has, but his hands have been severely tied, and seemingly any time a pitcher returns from injury, another two go down. Jameson Taillon recently went down to a DFA. That's why it's so important that the Cubs pitchers still present like Peterson need to step it up a notch.
On July 21st, Peterson posted 6.2 innings against the Tigers in which no runs were scored. As of this writing, that's the only occasion that this has happened. However, on July third, Peterson was the driving force behind the Cardinals spanking the Cubs 17-1 after he gave up ten runs in just three innings that he didn't even finish. The Cubs need better. Cubs fans deserve better.
With Peterson on the mound on Saturday against the Yankees, many Chicago fans are on the edge of their seat. This could be a recipe for disaster, and any single inning could blow the lid off of the entire game. If Peterson can remain calm and post four or five solid inning in which he keeps the score relatively low, the Cubs are in business. If the offense is there to support him, there's no reason that Peterson can't go out and win that game.
