The Chicago Cubs have been one of the most injured teams in baseball, and that goes doubly so for the Cubs pitching staff. The Cubs have perpetually been on a mad dash to catch the Brewers and they seemingly have been stuck in limbo for almost two months. I'm not blaming the pitching, but Craig Counsell isn't a magician. Counsell recently gave an office update on the status of various pitchers currently on the Cubs, with some details for their return.
Three injured Cubs pitchers are moving closer to the mound
Edward Cabrera hasn't taken to the mound for the Cubs since late June, missing starts due to a moderate left hamstring strain. Counsell has previously indicated that Cabrera is likely to require multiple rehab starts in Triple-A Iowa. This could mean he's going to return to the Cubs in mid-August, after the trade deadline. With the Cubs likely to add a starting pitcher at the deadline, it's possible Cabrera's return to the rotation could bolster a real push for the NL Central.

Counsell referred to Ben Brown as "essentially a spring training pitcher". Brown hasn't thrown for the Cubs since June 19th, when he led the Cubs for six strong innings to a 16-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Brown was one of the arms that stepped up to fill injury laden spots in the rotation. He quickly became on of the pitchers that Counsell relied upon heavily until being sidelined with a strained neck. He's been spotted at the Cubs facility in Arizona and it's looking hopeful, but Counsell said on Wednesday that bullpen sessions are still far off.
Justin Steele was also mentioned as the Cubs continue the season without their ace on the mound. He's making progress, but it would be unwise to hold your breath for a return from Steele this season. Being optimistic is fine, but Steele has miles to go before being close to returning to the show.
All in all, the Cubs are on a good timeline to receive timely help from pitchers they've lost. Provided everyone can remain healthy, the Cubs actually have a really talented pitching staff. The problem is that Counsell has had to build these games with new faces every day and reliable arms suddenly not being so reliable. With encouraging news from Cabrera, and Brown following on the horizon, the Cubs may be able to turn their very real issue into a very real strength.
