The Chicago Bears entered the 2025 offseason with one clear goal. After watching Caleb Williams run for his life on every dropback and lead the league in sacks taken, general manager Ryan Poles bolstered the trenches.
The Bears' offensive line overhaul was as notorious as it was successful. Even with rookie Ozzy Trapillo out for the long run with a major injury, they should be in a strong position to keep Williams out of harm's way in 2026.
Notably, that also means those who failed to step up and fulfill the task may no longer have a place on the team. As ESPN insider Courtney Cronin predicted, that might be the end of the lien for Kiran Amegadije.
The Bears may finally move on from Kiran Amegadije
“Trapilo will likely start the season on the PUP list, so that frees up a roster spot,” Cronin wrote. “Braxton Jones has the inside track to win the left tackle job in a competition that also features Wills and Kiran Amegadjie. The Bears don’t need to keep all three tackles when Benedet seems primed to be Chicago’s swing tackle, so the final spot on the initial 53-man roster goes to [Caden] Barnett, the interior lineman who the Bears gave $277,500 in guaranteed money on his UDFA contract.”
A third-round pick out of Yale, Kiran Amegadije entered the league as a former All-FCS guy. He's now about to enter the third-year of his $5.8 million rookie pact, but he hasn't done absolutely anything to show he's even worthy of a roster spot.
He suffered a quadriceps injury late in his final season in college, and he couldn't do much with the Bears until late in his first offseason. He made six appearances as a rookie, and while he showed some promise in pass protection, he was called for a whopping five penalties in just 67 pass-blocking snaps.
The Bears moved him to the interior of the offensive line last offsseason, but to no avail. He managed to make the roster, but didn't play a single snap. Then, he suffered an elbow injury that forced him to spend some time on the Injured Reserve (IR) list.
The Bears are strong in the interior of the offensive line. He'd probably have a better shot at making the roster as a swing tackle, but again, with an injury-proneness and not much to show for it, he's pretty much on thin ice right now.
To add insult to injury, the Bears are also reportedly high on Caden Barnett. The undrafted free agent is one of the strongest candidates in the Bears' roster bubble to make the team, and he may already be ahead of Amegadije in the pecking order.
The Bears' rebuild took far less time than expected, and Super Bowl contenders can't get emotional. If someone can't catch up or keep up, there's no need to keep them around, especially when cutting ties won't even hurt the finances.
