The Bears can't afford to waste Caleb Williams' best opportunity yet

There is no more hiding behind potential for Caleb Williams.

That isn't a criticism of the Chicago Bears quarterback. It is the reality of where he is in his career.

Williams is entering his third NFL season, his second with Ben Johnson as his head coach, and the expectations surrounding the Bears are considerably different than they were a year ago. Chicago is coming off an 11-6 season, won the NFC North and finally gave its fans something they had been waiting years to see: a legitimate reason to believe the quarterback they drafted first overall can be the guy who changes everything.

Now comes the hard part.

The Bears have to turn that belief into something real.

And Williams has been given perhaps the best opportunity a young quarterback could ask for.

He has a coach who was brought to Chicago largely because of his ability to build an offense around a quarterback. He has spent another offseason in Johnson's system. He has a talented group of offensive weapons around him. He has already experienced the pressure of leading a team that expects to win rather than simply hoping to stay competitive.

There are no excuses left for the Bears to waste this opportunity.

That doesn't mean Williams needs to throw for 5,000 yards or carry the offense every Sunday. In fact, the Bears should want the opposite. The best version of this team won't require Williams to play superhero football every week.

It needs him to be consistent.

That has been the biggest question surrounding Williams heading into this season. Even while his relationship with Johnson has continued to develop, Johnson has made it clear that consistency is the next step for his quarterback. The flashes aren't enough anymore.

Nobody doubts Williams' talent

We've already seen what Williams can do when everything clicks. The arm talent is obvious. His ability to create outside the pocket is obvious. His willingness to extend plays can turn a broken play into a huge gain.

But there is a difference between making spectacular plays and becoming a quarterback who consistently makes the right play.

That's where this season matters.

The Bears don't need Williams to prove he belongs in the NFL. He already does.

They need him to prove he can be the reason they are eventually playing deep into January.

That's a much bigger question.

Chicago's 2025 season showed how quickly things can change when the quarterback, coaching staff and roster begin moving in the same direction. The Bears won seven games by coming from behind, a sign of the team's resilience but also a reminder that they spent plenty of time putting themselves in difficult situations.

The Bears cannot keep relying on that

Eventually, the quarterback has to make life easier for everyone else.

That's why the opener against Carolina on September 13th matters, even if it would be foolish to make sweeping conclusions from one game.

Williams doesn't need to throw four touchdowns. He doesn't need to make every highlight play.

He needs to look like a quarterback who understands exactly what this offense is supposed to be and can operate it without constantly needing something extraordinary to happen.

That's the next step.

And the Bears have too much invested in Williams, Johnson and this roster to waste another year waiting for it.

The window is open. Williams just needs to make sure Chicago walks through it.
