Steelers’ Shocking Justin Fields Decision Could Cost the Bears
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears are in their bye week enjoying a 4-2 start to the season. Another team that is off to a similarly strong start is the Pittsburgh Steelers with Justin Fields at the helm. The former Bears QB is having the best stretch of his career, leading his new team to a 4-2 record with a career-high 66.3% completion rate, five touchdowns, and one interception while adding 231 yards and five scores on the ground.
Not only does it make Bears fans happy to see their former player finally find success, but it also helps Chicago in a big way. When the Bears traded Fields to Pittsburgh in the offseason, they received a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick. The condition was that if Fields played in 51% of snaps, the draft pick would become a fourth-round pick.
After Fields' start, many had assumed that the Bears would get the fourth-rounder. It turns out that may not be a guarantee. According to reports, the Steelers are giving veteran Russell Wilson first-team reps in practice this week and could potentially play him in Week 7.
NFL News: Steelers May Give Russell Wilson the Start in Week 7
Head coach Mike Tomlin refused to reveal who the starting QB will be in Week 7. However, the fact that it is even a conversation has to be frustrating for Fields.
After Wilson signed with the Steelers for the veteran's minimum, he was named the starter to begin the season. He was later ruled out for the season opener after re-aggravating his calf injury in practice. Since then, Fields has performed admirably in Wilson's place.
We will know more about the situation once Tomlin announces the starter but it seems like a big mistake to bench your promising young quarterback playing the best football of his career in favor of a 35-year-old way past his prime.
