The Chicago Bears are seeing Caleb Williams return to practice this week. While three weeks appears a bit soon to return from a hamstring injury, that was always on the realistic side of the timeline for him.
Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze Identifies Difference With Caleb Williams
Wide receiver Rome Odunze made it clear that while the Bears can win the other quarterbacks, there is another level they can get to with Williams.
"I mean, obviously we've got a lot of reps with 18,” said Odunze on the biggest difference between Williams and the other quarterbacks. “He's our starting quarterback. He has tremendous talent, arm ability, and his legs as well. So obviously when you're missing a player like that on the field, you're going to feel it.”
Odunze made it clear that just because the team has been without Williams, it does not excuse the struggles against Green Bay. Still, they know that if they want to reach the ceiling they believe they can, they need Williams.
“We have a ton of confidence in our quarterbacks, quarterback room as a whole, to go out there and make plays. So in his absence, they're going out there and doing that, but obviously 18 is a playmaker for sure."
The league still has not seen exactly what the Bears offense can do in the second season with Caleb Williams.
In Week 1, they hung 59 points on the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have proceeded to lose players since then, and they still have not given up as many. They have allowed 50 points in the three weeks combined since then.
Chicago came back down to earth against the Vikings. However, they are the best defense in the NFL; there was a rainstorm, and Williams was leading a drive for the win when he got injured. More than that, they got back down the field with Tyson Bagent before he came up short.
So, they put up 59 against an average defense, and there were plenty of conditions holding them back against an elite squad. This could end up being one of the better offenses in the NFL the minute that Williams gets back.
For all of the hype that Bagent gets in the offseason, he never lives up to it on the field. For as fun as Keenum was a few weeks ago, there is a reason he has been a third-string quarterback for a few years. This is a significant upgrade.
